A gentlemen`s agreement or gentleman`s agreement is an informal, non-legally binding agreement between two or more parties. It is usually oral, but it can be written or simply understood as part of a tacit agreement by convention or mutually beneficial label. The essence of a gentlemen`s agreement is that it relies on the honor of the parties for its fulfillment, rather than being enforceable in any way. It is different from a legal agreement or contract. Many Japanese Americans argued to the school board that the segregation of schools violated the 1894 treaty, which did not explicitly address education, but emphasized that the Japanese would have equal rights in America. According to the review decisions of the Supreme Court of the United States (Plessy v. Ferguson, 1896), a state did not violate the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution by prescribing racial segregation as long as the separate institutions were essentially the same. Tokyo newspapers condemned segregation as an insult to Japanese pride and honor. The Japanese government wanted to protect its reputation as a world power. The aim was to reduce tensions between the two Pacific countries. The agreement was never ratified by the United States Congress and replaced by the Immigration Act of 1924. Until Jackie Robinson was hired by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1946, a gentlemen`s agreement guaranteed that African-American players were excluded from organized baseball.
In the automotive industry, Japanese manufacturers have agreed that no production vehicle would have more than 276 hp (206 kW; 280 hp); the agreement ended in 2005. German manufacturers limit the maximum speed of high-performance sedans and station wagons to 250 kilometers per hour (155 mph). When the Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle exceeded 310 km/h (190 mph) in 1999, fears of a European ban or crackdown prompted Japanese and European motorcycle manufacturers to agree on an upper limit of 300 km/h (186 mph) at the end of 1999. See the list of the fastest production motorcycles. A gentleman`s agreement, defined in the early 20th century as „an agreement between gentlemen working on price controls,“ has been described by one source as the loosest form of a „pool.“ It has been pointed out that such agreements can be found in all types of industries and are numerous in the steel and iron industries. Japan was willing to limit immigration to the United States, but was deeply violated by San Francisco`s discriminatory law, which specifically targeted its people. .
